Collaborations

My friend and fellow Indianapolis artist Kat Silver asked me if I would be interested in doing some collaborations for a local exhibit.  I absolutely LOVE her work, so I jumped at the chance.  She is a very skilled artist with a wonderful sense of whimsy, so we decided I would do the background landscapes, which are what I do best, and she would finish it with people, animals, etc., depending on what the piece looks like it needs.  I can’t wait to see what we come up with.  I think my part is finished, and now Kat will add her lighthearted magic!

Midwest Winter Sunrise

I just finished and signed this 12 x 24″ acrylic on canvas.  It’s from a photograph by Ohio artist and photographer Shannon Godby, who has generously given me his permission to use the photo for inspiration.  It was fun experimenting with glaze.

New Year = New techniques & new knowledge

In keeping with my resolution to really focus on my art this year, I’ve tried a new approach to a painting, and I’m experimenting with glazing.  I’m probably not doing it right, but I think it’s something that requires practice.  I also signed up for a teaching course on the business side of being a professional artist.  I’m hoping the investment is worthwhile and can get me more exposure, and of course, more sales.  I’m hoping to have at least one of these three paintings in the Stutz exhibit for February, and I’ll have some of my art at Sacred Roots Midwifery and Birth Center for the next few months.  Wish me luck.

Mini paintings are great gifts for anytime!

Mini paintings make fantastic gifts. A little touch of original art that is reasonably priced and very transportable makes a unique statement that will add to the personal touches of someone’s home or office. Send me a favorite photograph of a flower, tree or landscape and I will create something just for you. At this point, I could not guarantee it would be ready before Christmas, but think about birthdays, Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, or the best of all:  a gift for no apparent reason.

Indiana Interchurch Center Gallery exhibition: Home

I am SO excited.  I found out today that this painting has been accepted for the exhibit of women’s art called “Home.”  The cherry on top was the email I got today from Frank Relle, of Frank Relle Photography, who told me he loves the painting that was inspired by one of his photographs.

Gallery 924 is a local art gallery here in Indianapolis. They are looking for submissions for their 5th annual TINY exhibition. These are three of the four pieces I’m working on for submission. They will be for sale after the exhibit, assuming that the gallery accepts them. These pieces are 5″ x 5″ each, and would make nice Christmas gifts. They are very easy to ship, unlike large canvases. The fourth one is a little more complicated and I hope to finish it this evening if I have time. Mondays are simply horrific at my full-time job, especially when we only have four people working.

I had put this aside for a while because I wasn’t sure what to do next. Recently I looked again at the photograph by New Orleans photographer Frank Relle and was inspired – as I always am when I see his work. So, I just decided the best thing to do would be to get some water, clean up my studio and just jump in. This is what I have so far. I’m getting excited about finishing it.  This has been a big challenge.

I’m a Scorpio, a water sign, if you believe in such things. I do know that my emotions are influenced by the moon, and given that adult humans are 50-65% water, that makes perfect sense to me. I love to paint water scenes, especially of areas in the south, and of Mexico, that comprised much of my childhood and a significant part of my adult life so far (not that you could really accuse me of being an adult. I’m just old). Here is what I’m ready to sign. I enjoyed doing this painting so much, and the feelings and sense memories it evoked, that I would be lying if I said it was work. By the way, if you’re at all given to thinking slightly outside the proverbial box, pick up a copy of The Hidden Messages in Water, by Masaru Emoto. It’s a fascinating glimpse at what I consider the intersection of science, namely quantum physics, and spirituality. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Emoto when he came to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to lead a blessing ceremony of Lake Pontchartrain.

So many things I want to paint

I have hundreds of photographs of scenes I want to paint, some of which are still beyond my skill level. The one above, though, is exactly the kind of landscape I love to paint. It was sent to me by my sister of some pine trees near Grayton Beach, FL. I can’t wait to finish the one I’m doing now and start on this!
